Baptism serves different purposes depending on religious tradition, but there are several common reasons why people practice it:
Christian perspectives: Most Christians view baptism as a sacrament that symbolizes spiritual rebirth and the washing away of sin. It represents dying to an old way of life and being "born again" in faith. Many see it as following Jesus's example, since he was baptized by John the Baptist. For some denominations, it's considered necessary for salvation, while others view it as an important but symbolic act of obedience and public declaration of faith.

Our History: A Legacy Rooted In Faith
A Legacy Rooted in Faith
First Baptist Church of Fairfield's story began in 1906, in the humble living room of Brother General Richardson, at the corner of 62nd Street and Avenue D. What started as a small gathering under the name Macedonia Baptist Church would grow, over the next century, into a cornerstone of the Fairfield community.
It wasn't long before the young congregation outgrew that living room. A lot was purchased at 59th Street and Avenue D, and the members built their first church home. Then, on July 16, 1935, the congregation embraced a new identity — becoming First Baptist Church of Fairfield, the name it proudly carries today.
Growing Alongside a City
As Fairfield's steel industry boomed, so did the church. Membership swelled to more than two thousand strong, and the congregation responded by building a larger sanctuary and, later, an educational building to serve its growing family of believers.
By 1963, the church had purchased two adjoining lots for parking, and members set their sights on something even bigger: a brand-new edifice. In April 1973, the congregation made the bold move of stepping away from their longtime home to worship at Robinson Elementary School — a temporary arrangement that lasted twenty-three months while their new sanctuary took shape.
That season of waiting ended in triumph. On March 17, 1975, the congregation walked into the edifice that still stands today — a three-level home for worship spanning the main floor, second floor, and downstairs level.
Building for the Future
The decades that followed brought milestone after milestone. In 1993, the church proudly paid off its mortgage. An elevator was installed, opening every floor — balcony, main level, and downstairs — to all who worship there. The sanctuary received a beautiful refurbishing in 2013, and in 2021 and 2025, the upstairs and downstairs restrooms were remodeled to be more welcoming and fully handicap accessible.
Today, FBCF's footprint extends well beyond its sanctuary walls. The church owns a Community Outreach Building at 60th Street and Avenue D, along with several houses, lots, and three parking areas throughout Fairfield — tangible investments in the neighborhood it calls home.
A Heart for Missions and Service
FBCF's compassion reaches far beyond Fairfield. In 2008, the church gave $7,000 to help build a church and dig a well for clean drinking water in Africa, and its Foreign Mission Ministry continues that global work today. Closer to home, the FBCF Relief Committee gives thousands of dollars every year to help members and neighbors alike — covering utility bills, rent, medications, and other urgent needs.

Leadership Today
In 2023, Rev. Dr. Victor S. Lewis stepped into the pulpit as the ninth pastor to lead First Baptist Church of Fairfield, carrying forward a legacy of faith that began over a century ago. Rev. Robert G. Twyman, our beloved eighth pastor, now serves as Pastor Emeritus, and Rev. Larry Robbins serves as Associate Minister and leader of our Small Group Ministry.
From a living room gathering in 1906 to a thriving congregation with a heart for the world, First Baptist Church of Fairfield's story is still being written — and we invite you to be part of the next chapter.

Rev. Dr. Victor Sinclair Lewis, Sr.
Pastor, First Baptist Church of Fairfield
A Calling That Started Early
Victor Sinclair Lewis, Sr. knew his calling before most people know what they want for lunch. He preached his very first sermon at just 13 years old, and by 21, he had answered the call fully, stepping into ordained ministry. That early spark has carried him through decades of preaching, teaching, and shepherding congregations across the country — and today, he leads First Baptist Church of Fairfield, AL, as its pastor.
Over the years, Pastor Lewis has carried the Word far beyond Fairfield, preaching throughout the United States and teaching within both the National Baptist Convention of America and the National Baptist Convention, USA, Inc.
A Scholar of the Word
Pastor Lewis pairs a preacher's heart with a scholar's discipline. He holds a B.S. in Business Administration from Miles College in Fairfield, AL, and went on to earn master's degrees in Pastoral Leadership and Biblical Counseling from Birmingham Theological Seminary, as well as in Pastoral Ministry and Biblical Studies from Selma University. His academic journey didn't stop there — he holds a Doctorate in Christian Education from Andersonville Theological Seminary in Camilla, GA, and a Doctorate in Ministry from Birmingham Theological Seminary.
His pursuit of knowledge has also taken him through the W.H.W. Preaching Institute in Los Angeles, Beeson Divinity Pastors School, the Ember to the Flame Church Leadership PCA Pastor and Leadership Conference, and Ph.D. studies at Trinity Theological Seminary in New Burg, IN.
Caring for the Whole Person
Beyond the pulpit, Pastor Lewis brings comfort and care to people in their most vulnerable moments. As a Board-Certified Chaplain (BCC) through the National Association of Professional Chaplains, he currently serves as a Staff Chaplain at Shelby Medical Center and a part-time Chaplain at Grandview Medical Center, building on years of experience as a Hospice Clinical Chaplain.
He's also passed that expertise on to others — writing and teaching courses on Pastoral Care Ministry and training chaplains across Alabama. His voice has reached readers nationally, too, through preaching articles published in national magazines and commentary contributed to various Christian books. In 2025, his devotion to service was recognized with an award from the Fairfield Civitan.
A Leader Among Leaders
Pastor Lewis's influence extends well into the wider Baptist community. He currently serves as Second Vice Moderator of the Alabama Peace Baptist District Missionary Association and as Director of Foreign Mission for the Alabama State Baptist Missionary Convention. His record of service includes past roles as Secretary of the Mission and Evangelism Division of the Alabama Baptist State Convention; Late Night Chairman of the Alabama Missionary Baptist State Convention (2013–2019); Dean of Congress for the Springhill Missionary Baptist District Association in Montgomery; and a past member of the Mt. Pilgrim Baptist District Association in Birmingham. He now also serves as Vice Moderator of the Peace Baptist District Association of Birmingham.
Community and Legacy
Pastor Lewis stays deeply engaged with the causes and communities that shaped him. He's an active member of the PICO National Network of Church and Community, the NAACP, Kappa Kappa Psi National Honorary Band Fraternity, and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. (Alpha Upsilon Lambda Chapter, Montgomery, AL). In 2024, his alma mater honored him with Miles College's 50 Under 50 Alumni Award.
Family
At home, Pastor Lewis is a devoted husband and father. He is married to the former Tamara L. Hines, and together they are proudly raising two sons, Victor Sinclair Lewis, Jr., and Charles Singleton Lewis.
